dTHS Senior Gains Admission to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

A huge round of applause goes to de Toledo senior, Sydney G. ('24), on being offered admission to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, NY) – including signing a letter of intent to join the Academy’s Diving Team!

As a senior at de Toledo High School, Sydney is excelling across the curriculum while enrolled in a rigorous and demanding course load. She has challenged herself with a college preparatory program throughout her high school career, including demonstrating her passion for the STEM field, physics, and engineering.

Sydney is also a leader among her peers. She is the founder and president of de Toledo’s Service for Heroes Club, responsible for curating monthly service events and providing care packages for military personnel, fire fighters, paramedics, police, and all first responders.

In addition, she has been a member of the Sea Cadet program for two years and has achieved the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. She has completed Recruit Training, Coast Guard Maritime Interdiction Law Enforcement Training, as well as the Petty Officer Leadership Academy (where she was awarded the Honor Platoon).

Over the summer, Sydney completed CAL Fire’s prestigious CAL Fire Camp Cinder in San Luis Obispo; she was just one of 30 women selected out of 600 applicants to participate in this leadership program.

Sydney is also a focused athlete, continuously working to improve her overall fitness. She is a certified lifeguard and has earned certification in CPR, AED, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, and basic life support.  

A gymnast for 12 years, Sydney achieved a level-10 qualification and became a national qualifier with a top 100 ranking in the sport. She has also been a key contributor to de Toledo’s varsity swim team and serves as the team captain. 

With this background, Sydney is also signing a letter of intent to join the Merchant Marine’s Diving Team.
